It is amazing to see the student work that has gone into these History Day Projects!
Last year, for the first time ever, we moved over to virtual formats, launching virtual gallery walks to showcase student projects through Padlet. We are very happy to continue this “new tradition” of showcasing and celebrating the work of our students in virtual formats.

Mahalo nui loa to Hawaiʻi History Day teachers, students, judges, volunteers, and families. We offer our sincere gratitude for the histories you are teaching us!
This past season, we have been hard at work collecting stories from people across our communities! Our new district webpages feature stories of people from across our districts who mālama their histories and communities. Visit our new district webpages here and be inspired!
This year we are honoring Mary Kawena Pukui as the face of our Hawaiʻi History Day button. It would be hard to imagine the world without the knowledge that she has preserved. The preeminent authority of her generation, Mary Kawena Pukui worked tirelessly in her roles as a history and language scholar, writer, ethnographer, hoʻopaʻa hula (hula expert), and cultural practitioner.
It is with immense gratitude that we are able to feature resources exploring the life and stories of Mary Kawena Pukui, including a video by Sancia Shiba Nash featuring Laʻakea Suganuma, grandson of Mary Kawena Pukui and president of the Mary Kawena Pukui Cultural Preservation Society, and Dr. Noenoe K. Silva, a professor at University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and a renowned scholar in our current era.
