More Stories from Honolulu District

The Hawaiʻi Department of Education’s Honolulu District on the island of Oʻahu stretches from the Lēʻahi (Diamond Head) side of Ke Awalau o Puʻuloa (Pearl Harbor) to the crests of Maunalua and falls within two traditional districts, Kona and Koʻolaupoko, and encompasses eight ahupuaʻa. We can find iconic emblems of our tourist industry, like Waikīkī and the sharp sloping profile of Lēʻahi. As is true throughout the islands of Hawaiʻi, Honolulu District is replete with a complex history going back more than a thousand years. Because of the presence of two deep water ports, plentiful fresh water sources, and lush valleys, this district became central to the political and social life of the islands by the mid-nineteenth century.
