In this period of prolonged crisis, we have been made to confront what is ugly in the world. Perhaps, however, we have also become more attentive to beauty: a sentimental longing for what we miss that is beautiful, and an appreciation for the beauty that remains.

This conversation invites us to focus and reflect on beauty. In the article, Why Is Beauty Important to Us?, a group spanning writers and scientists, actors and designers, share their perspectives on “the indispensability of beauty in our everyday lives.” Is beauty indispensable? What is the role of beauty in the world and in our lives today? How do we recognize or suppress beauty in different forms? What do we mean by beauty, and what values do we assign to it?
