From ʻĀina Momona:
Originally founded by Mahealani Dudoit and ku‘ualoha ho‘omanawanui to increase opportunities for ‘ōiwi voices to be published, ‘Ōiwi: A Native Hawaiian Journal has served as a highly regarded community journal for over 15 years. Inspired by the Maunakea movement, ku‘ualoha, who is a member of ‘Āina Momona’s Board of Directors and an Associate Professor at the University of Hawai‘i, Mānoa is bringing the journal to ‘Āina Momona to give a new generation of kānaka and their allies a forum to share stories from the mauna.
Maunakea is a sacred piko (center) in Hawaiian culture, the impetus for Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) and our supporters in protecting the mauna from further desecration and mismanagement. In recent years, the proposed development of the TMT (thirty meter telescope) on Maunakea has galvanized unprecedented aloha ʻāina activism, often described as “the Kahoʻolawe of this generation.” Clearly our love for our ʻāina and the power of Mauna Kea to unite the Hawaiian lāhui is powerful.
