Publication Assistance Grant is designed to support humanities publications, ranging from interpretive museum or historical site brochures and simple monographs to major books and texts.

The Publication Assistance Grant application process is competitive.

Publication Assistance Grant Requirements:

  • The project is done within a clear humanities context and content.
  • Duration of grant project may not exceed one year from the start date to the end date.
  • A publication at the end of the project.
  • A free public program to explain the project and to promote public access.
    o A plan(s) for soliciting evaluations from the audience at the public program, and from the overall results of the publication.
  • A concerted effort to publicize the book or other printed text that was funded with the Publication Assistance Grant.
  • A free public program to explain the project and to promote public access.
    o A plan(s) for soliciting evaluations from the audience at the public program, and from the overall results of the publication.
  • A concerted effort to publicize the resources made available through the grant.
  • Acknowledgement of HCH on all collaterals pertaining to the HCH-funded project.
    o Publication has an HCH acknowledgement in or on the book, pamphlet, etc…
  • A Final Report is submitted at the end of the grant project.
  • Applicant is required to submit an IRS W-9 form.

Eligible Applicants:

  • Individuals with a strong background in the humanities.
    o A résumé is required.
    o A sponsoring organization is not required for this grant type.
  • If the applicant does not have a humanities background, a humanities scholar, lead consultant or topic expert in the field need to be integral to the project.
    o Letter(s) of commitment from key project staff of their roles for the project is required.
  • Nonprofit organizations serving the general public of Hawai‘i.
    o Nonprofit organizations must have a D-U-N-S (Data Universal Numbering System) number.  D-U-N-S numbers are free and easily obtained from Dun & Bradstreet.  Most likely your organization already has a D-U-N-S number.  Be sure to confirm with your administrative or grants office.  For more information, go to http://fedgov.dnb.com/webform.

HCH does NOT award Publication Assistance Grants for:

  • Projects that do not incorporate a clear humanities context and content;
  • Political advocacy, or lobbying;
  • Social, psychological, legal or health services, training or counseling programs;
  • Reception, food, leis, and entertainment;
  • Administrative overhead;
  • Fundraising projects.

Publication Assistance Grant applications may be submitted at any of the two application deadlines per year.
